The Meditation
MADE IN BOONE began while I was contemplating Daniel Sanders’ MIA — Made in Asheville.
Then another set of letters appeared:
MIB.
Made in Boone.
And at the same time:
Men in Black.
Both readings arrived together.
Davey
Alongside the letters, I saw a raccoon-capped figure.
I heard the name:
Davey.
I knew the figure as Davey Crockett.
So I drew what I had seen.
The Reference Came After
Only after drawing the figure did I search for Davey Crockett imagery.
That search led me to a Davy Crockett postage stamp.
The stamp became a framework for refining a figure that had already appeared and already been drawn.
The vision came first.
The reference came later.
The Pine in the I
I wanted the central I in MIB to have its own presence.
The pine entered through negative space.
Its shape participates in making the I itself:
M — pine — B.
Davey and Boone
The figure I saw and drew was Davey Crockett.
Because the garment says MADE IN BOONE and the raccoon-skin cap may naturally call Daniel Boone to mind, I keep those histories distinct.
The connection here is visual and associative rather than biographical.
What “Made In” Continued to Open
The image became a garment, and later the MIB structure traveled into other designs.
MADE IN TRINIDAD and MADE IN BARBADOS each developed through their own place, symbols, and histories.
The shared form remained.
The places stayed distinct.
And the words MADE IN continued to open another question for me:
Can a place help make us—not only where we were born, but where we live, work, love, create, and change?
The Remembrance
MIA.
MIB.
Made in Boone.
Men in Black.
